Horses
Henry's first horse in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is Pebbles, his mare from the first game, recovered at the Semine stables with a Speech check or for a fee; riding her about 35 km unlocks the hidden perk Good Old Pebbles. Herring is offered at Trosky Castle, more than 20 other horses are sold or stolen, and Update 1.3 added free horse racing.
Henry's horse in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is Pebbles, the mare he rode in the first game, whom he finds at the Semine stables early on and takes back either by passing a skill check with the groom or by paying for her (TheGamer's beginner tips, Feb 4, 2025). A horse carries Henry and a second inventory, rides into battle, and races; its stats are stamina, carrying capacity, speed and courage. Later Henry can swap Pebbles for the stronger Herring at Trosky Castle, buy one of the horses grooms sell in both regions, or steal one, and riding raises the Horsemanship skill. Since Update 1.3 on May 15, 2025, horse races and mounted archery contests are part of the base game for free (Warhorse on Steam).

Getting Pebbles back
Pebbles is waiting in a field at the Semine stables. Sir Hanush of Leipa gave her to Henry in the first game (TheGamer, Mar 10, 2025), and in the sequel TheGamer's tip is to go to Semine early, ask the stable owner about the gray horse in the field and pass the skill check, which returns her free (TheGamer). Game Rant names the groom Ballatay (Game Rant, Feb 5, 2025).
The price if the check fails differs by outlet. PCGamesN (Feb 21, 2025) says about 410 groschen, varying with Henry's Charisma, while Game Rant's early-game guide gives 150 groschen. Charisma and Speech checks are explained on Speech and Charisma.
Finding her earns the achievement An Old Friend, which 64.4% of Steam players had on Oct 25, 2026 (Steam).
Pebbles or Herring
Herring is offered at Trosky Castle as a trade for Pebbles. Game Rant's Back in the Saddle walkthrough (Feb 11, 2025) has Hired Hand Kabat offer Henry a choice of Pebbles or Herring during that main quest, and TheGamer (Feb 12, 2025) places it there too, while PCGamesN says Herring becomes available after For Whom the Bell Tolls. Pebbles can be bought back from Groom Ballatay at Semine if traded (Game Rant, Feb 15, 2025). The quests are on Main Quests in Trosky.
At the start Herring is the better horse. Game Rant's comparison gives Pebbles Stamina 127, Capacity 138, Speed 32 and Courage 12 (value 100), and Herring Stamina 169, Capacity 138, Speed 40 and Courage 14 (value 1,260); PCGamesN gives Herring's capacity as 158.
Each has a hidden perk that changes the picture. Riding Pebbles at least 35 km unlocks Good Old Pebbles, and riding Herring at least 50 km, fast travel excluded, unlocks Red Herring (Game Rant's best horses, Feb 17, 2026). PC Gamer's headline advises not to get rid of the starting horse because of the secret perk (PC Gamer).
The perked figures depend on the date. PCGamesN's horse guide of Feb 21, 2025 gave Good Old Pebbles Stamina 210, Capacity 338, Speed 55 and Courage 28, and Red Herring Stamina 235, Capacity 308, Speed 52 and Courage 14. Patch 1.4 then "slightly reduced" the boosts of both perks (Patch 1.4 notes, Sep 9, 2025), and Game Rant's Feb 2026 update says the patch weakened both horses in everything but carrying capacity, while raising every horse's capacity. Game Rant's hidden perk guide also says Red Herring trades capacity for stamina and cannot be held with Good Old Pebbles, a point a reader disputes (Game Rant, Feb 27, 2025).
A fast horse matters once in the story. In the Kuttenberg main quest Oratores the Cardinal flees on a fast horse, and catching him takes a fast horse or Good Old Pebbles, with the Head Start perk helping (TheGamer, Mar 4, 2025).
Best horses and where to buy them
More than 20 horses can be ridden, and grooms in the Kuttenberg region sell the best of them. TheGamer's best horses (Feb 12, 2025) rates Kincsem in Kuttenberg highest for stamina and speed and Mark in Grund for capacity. No outlet read for this page lists the grooms' prices.
This table is Game Rant's Feb 17, 2026 list, which postdates Patch 1.4, with PCGamesN's Feb 2025 figures for horses Game Rant does not rate.
| Horse | Stats | How to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Meadow | 219 stamina, 450 capacity, 52 speed | Stolen from a bandit camp northeast of Bylany |
| Gringolet | 60 speed | Taken from Sigismund's camp in Sir Jezhek's side quest |
| Kincsem | 235 stamina, 60 speed | Groom Hanniker, Kuttenberg |
| Mark | 231 stamina, 450 capacity | Groom Hanna, Grund |
| Pisek Lad | 194 stamina, 425 capacity, 55 speed | Horse market, southwest Kuttenberg |
| Knights of Hradetz's Horse | 55 speed, 30 courage | Stolen west of St. Barbara's Cathedral (needs Legacy of the Forge) |
| Kasztanka, Erdel | Speed, capacity | Groom Hashtal, Maleshov |
| Artax | 227 stamina (PCGamesN) | Maleshov |
| Khartoum | 53 speed (PCGamesN) | Maleshov |
| Windwurf | 57 speed (PCGamesN) | Grund |
PCGamesN gives Kasztanka 59 speed and Erdel 368 capacity (PCGamesN); Game Rant's own page gives Erdel both 463 and 368. Gringolet's quest is one of the Kuttenberg Side Quests, and the DLC is on Legacy of the Forge.
Saddles, bridles and other horse gear
Horse gear trades speed for capacity or adds speed and stamina. TheGamer's horse gear list (Mar 22, 2025) gives these:
| Item | Effect |
|---|---|
| Cracowian (Dragon) Saddle | +200 capacity, -5 speed |
| Transylvanian Knight's Saddle | +140 capacity, -3.5 speed |
| Tournament Bridle | +20 stamina, +3 speed (sold by the Kuttenberg saddler) |
| Racing Horseshoe | +5 speed (sketch in the southwest Kuttenberg stables) |
| Dragon Chanfron | +5 courage, -5 speed, armor 60/60/60 |
| Quilted Caparison With Harness | +40 capacity, -7 speed, -10 stamina |
Some gear comes from quests and accounts. The races and contests of Back in the Saddle pay Rowel Spurs and the Bravante Saddle (Game Rant), Sir Jezhek's quest pays Jezhek's Spurs at +7 Charisma (Game Rant, Mar 2, 2025), and linking a PROS account gives the Lord of Skalitz caparison, collected from the shared stash after Laboratores (Warhorse on Steam, Feb 6, 2025). Patch 1.2 rebalanced horse equipment prices (Patch 1.2 notes, Mar 13, 2025).
Carrying and the horse's inventory
A horse is a second pack. Patch 1.5 let blacksmithing take materials straight from the shared stash or the horse's inventory (Patch 1.5 notes, Nov 11, 2025). An over-encumbered Henry cannot fast travel (Game Rant, Feb 4, 2025), so moving heavy loot onto the horse keeps the map open.
Horsemanship and mounted combat
Horsemanship rises by riding and is one of the fastest skills to level, per PCGamesN's leveling guide (Feb 4, 2025). Its perks, in PCGamesN's list as updated May 16, 2025 (numbers may have changed in later patches):
| Level | Perks |
|---|---|
| 6 | Knight Training (15% less stamina attacking from horseback); Saddler (cobbler's kit repairs 20% better, +1 pickpocketing) |
| 8 | Head Start (the horse dashes on a quick start); Towering Menace (rearing frightens enemies more) |
| 10 | Ride Like the Wind (less galloping stamina); Roadrunner or Wildrunner (less stamina on or off roads, pick one) |
| 12 | Final Stretch (a burst of speed near empty stamina, every 120 seconds); Trample (charging lowers enemy morale) |
| 14 | Into the Fray (fully charged saddle attacks +20%); War Horse (kills from the saddle raise the horse's morale) |
| 16 | Head Start II (no stamina lost on a quick start); Ride Like the Wind II (10% less) |
| 18 | Final Stretch II |
Henry can fight from the saddle. TheGamer's Mounted Knight build pairs War Horse, Knight Training and Into the Fray with a polearm for charges and full plate (TheGamer, Feb 26, 2025), and Warhorse said a well-aimed gunshot can "topple your target, the horse they ride on, and perhaps even the rider behind them" (Warhorse on Steam, Oct 18, 2024). The Aesop potion boosts riding and dog handling (PCGamesN, Feb 18, 2025). Builds are on Builds and every tree on Perks.
Horse racing and mounted archery
Horse Racing came free with Update 1.3 on May 15, 2025, the same day as the Brushes with Death DLC, and Warhorse called it the "Final Free DLC" (Warhorse on Steam). PLAION's announcement describes races against three opponents over several routes and difficulties, plus mounted archery on a set course (PLAION, May 15, 2025).
The races are held at a nomads' camp near Trosky. DSOGaming's patch summary (May 15, 2025) names the quests Horses for Courses and Racing Horseshoes. Scoring 150 points in the mounted archery contest through Horses for Courses earns the DLC achievement Flagellum Dei (Game Rant, May 16, 2025).
The story has races of its own. In Back in the Saddle, Pertzel's race pays the Bravante Saddle (Game Rant), and in the side quest Miri Fajta a horse race against Tibor is one of three contests, two of which Henry must win for the good ending (Game Rant, Feb 7, 2025).
Frequently asked questions
How do you get Pebbles back in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2? In Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 you go to the Semine stables, ask the groom about the gray horse in the field and pass the skill check to take Pebbles back free, TheGamer says. Otherwise she costs about 410 groschen by PCGamesN's account or 150 by Game Rant's.
Should you keep Pebbles or take Herring in KCD2? Herring starts stronger in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 (Stamina 169 and Speed 40 against Pebbles' 127 and 32, per Game Rant), but riding Pebbles about 35 km unlocks Good Old Pebbles, which made her one of the best horses in PCGamesN's Feb 2025 figures; Patch 1.4 then slightly reduced both horses' perk boosts.
What is the best horse in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2? TheGamer rates Kincsem, sold by Groom Hanniker in Kuttenberg, best for stamina and speed in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, and Mark from Grund best for capacity; Game Rant's Feb 2026 list gives Kincsem 235 stamina and 60 speed.
Where can you buy a horse in KCD2? In Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 grooms sell horses in Maleshov (Groom Hashtal), Grund (Groom Hanna), Kuttenberg (Groom Hanniker) and at the horse market in southwest Kuttenberg, per Game Rant, besides the Semine stables in the Trosky region.
How do you unlock Good Old Pebbles in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2? You unlock the hidden perk Good Old Pebbles in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 by riding Pebbles at least 35 km, Game Rant and TheGamer say; Herring's Red Herring needs 50 km, and fast travel does not count.
Is there horse racing in KCD2? Yes: Update 1.3 on May 15, 2025 added free horse races and mounted archery contests to Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 at a nomads' camp near Trosky, Warhorse announced, with races against three opponents on several routes.

Speech and CharismaDialogue checks in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 pass or fail outright: the stat a line uses (Persuasion, Coercion, Impression, Domination, Presence or Intimidation) must meet the check's level, and each draws on Speech, Charisma, gear and reputation. Speech is a main stat raised by haggling, books and passed checks; Charisma (maximum 30) comes from clean, fine clothes, baths, perfumes and perks. -
Main Quests in TroskyThe Trosky region holds the first 12 of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2's 32 main quests, from Last Rites to Storm; after the prologue they are Wedding Crashers, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Back in the Saddle, Necessary Evil, For Victory!, Divine Messenger, The Finger of God and Storm.
-
Side QuestsKingdom Come: Deliverance 2 has dozens of side quests (Game Rant lists 42 in the base game) across the Trosky and Kuttenberg regions, paying groschen, gear, reputation and skill experience. The standouts include The Fifth Commandment, The Mouth of Hell, In Vino Veritas and the Kuttenberg Tournament, and For Victory! and Oratores cancel several unfinished ones.

Legacy of the ForgeLegacy of the Forge is the second story DLC for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, released Sep 9, 2025 with Patch 1.4 for $13.99 on Steam. Henry joins Kuttenberg's blacksmiths' guild, rebuilds the burnt-out forge where his adoptive father Martin trained, earns Prestige to upgrade it, and restores the city's astronomical clock; it starts after the main quest Speak of the Devil. -
BuildsKingdom Come: Deliverance 2 has no classes, so a build is the skills Henry uses, the perks he buys and the gear he wears. Outlets recommend a heavy-weapon warrior in plate, a longbow archer, a Hook Gun gunner, a stealthy thief and a Speech-and-Charisma talker.
-
PerksPerks in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 are bonuses bought with perk points, one earned each time a stat or skill levels up. Tiers open at even levels from 6 to 20 in each of 20 trees. Outlets most often name Jack of All Trades, Secret of Matter, Martin's Heritage, Deft Hands and Diehard among the best.
