Saving and Savior Schnapps

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 has no free quicksave: you save by drinking a Savior Schnapps, sleeping in a bed you own, using Save and Quit from the menu, or through autosaves at quest milestones. Savior Schnapps is brewed from wine, one nettle and two belladonna, or bought cheaply at taverns and apothecaries.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 has no quicksave you can use at will: you save by drinking a Savior Schnapps (a single-use potion), by sleeping in a bed you own, with Save and Quit from the menu, or through autosaves when quests start, end or reach a milestone. PCGamesN's saving guide lists exactly those four ways. The system carries over from the first game, where it was just as divisive. Savior Schnapps is the one way to save anywhere, and it is easy to brew or buy.

The four ways to save

Savior Schnapps saves the game anywhere. It is a single-use potion that sits in the potion slot, and drinking one writes a save at once, PCGamesN explains. It is alcohol, so it makes Henry mildly drunk; the strongest versions also restore some health and give small buffs. Gamer Guides calls it "The best option for saving".

Sleeping in your own bed saves too. A bed Henry owns or rents saves the game whenever he sleeps in it, and the sleep restores health and energy, PCGamesN says. Gamer Guides adds that it is a hard save however long he rests, and that sleeping in someone else's bed counts as trespassing. The first free beds come from Blacksmith Radovan or Miller Kreyzl, and innkeepers rent long-term rooms (Zhelejov's Wagoner's Inn for 120 groschen, by Gamer Guides' count).

Save and Quit saves on the way out. It is in the menu, and it closes the game, which PCGamesN notes makes it slow to use as a save. Destructoid says the Save and Quit file is deleted once you continue from it, while gameranx says it is kept, so sources disagree on whether it can be used to reload a fight. Warhorse has not documented that rule itself.

Autosaves happen at story moments. The game saves when Henry begins or ends a quest or reaches a story milestone, PCGamesN says, and it advises stocking up on Schnapps before heading off alone. A Game Rant guide adds that a bathhouse visit also saves, and a plain bath passes the least time.

Savior Schnapps recipe

Savior Schnapps takes wine, one nettle and two belladonna. PCGamesN's recipe at the alchemy bench:

  1. Pour wine into the cauldron.
  2. Add one nettle and boil it for two turns of the hourglass.
  3. Grind two belladonna in the mortar and add them.
  4. Boil for one more turn.
  5. Pour into a phial.

The recipe is given during the prologue, Destructoid says, and any alchemy bench works, such as the one in Troskowitz. Belladonna is the scarce part: Gamer Guides says dried belladonna costs about 2 groschen at most alchemists, and that the Alchemy perks Secret of Matter and Secret of Matter II can turn one correct brew into up to 6 Schnapps. The full method and every other potion are on Alchemy and Potion Recipes.

Buying is the other route. PCGamesN says Savior Schnapps is sold in nearly every tavern and by almost every merchant who sells alcohol, and turns up in people's belongings. Gamer Guides puts the price at roughly 20 to 30 groschen depending on the seller; it is not a fixed price, and haggling and reputation move it. Some come as rewards: the ring prank in For Victory! pays a weak Savior Schnapps (Game Rant), and the treasure of the Map Left by the Deceased holds three (Game Rant).

How saving changed from the first game

The sequel keeps the first game's design. In Kingdom Come: Deliverance (2018) saving was likewise tied to sleeping in an owned bed or drinking "saviour schnapps", a drink that also made Henry drunk, and the backlash led Warhorse to promise "Save and Exit functionality" in Patch 1.3, while the game "will still lack a true quicksave function", bit-tech reported on Feb 20, 2018. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 launched with all of that in place: Schnapps, beds, Save and Quit and quest autosaves. More changes between the games are on Differences from the First Game.

Players again modded it away. PCGamesN's mod list puts Unlimited Saving II, which saves anytime without Schnapps, first among its best mods, and its console command list gives we_sys_nosavepotion = 1 on PC for the same effect. See Mods and Modding Tools.

Patch changes to saving

Warhorse has tuned the edges of the system, not the rules. The changes in the patch notes:

Patch Date Change
Hotfix 1.2.2 Mar 20, 2025 New Game removed from the in-game pause menu to prevent accidental overwrites (Warhorse)
Patch 1.4 Sep 9, 2025 A warning when the save pool is full and a Savior Schnapps would overwrite the oldest save; New Game removed from the menu after death (patch notes)

Every patch is listed on Patches and Updates.

Saving in Hardcore Mode

Hardcore Mode, added free in Patch 1.2.4 on Apr 15, 2025, does not list a change to saving among its rules. Warhorse's announcement names hidden map position, no fast travel, no surrendering enemies, no combat cues and at least three permanent negative perks, and Deep Silver's feature on the mode does not mention saving either. One negative perk touches it indirectly: with Somnambulant, Henry may wake from sleep at a random spot on the map. Players report differences in how Hardcore autosaves, but no Warhorse or press source we read confirms them. The mode is covered on Hardcore Mode.

Tips for saving well

Save before anything risky. A failed lockpick, a theft seen by a guard or a hard fight can undo an hour, so drink a Schnapps first; the Beginner's Guide makes the same point. Destructoid says the Save and Quit file is removed when you continue, which would make it a bookmark, not a checkpoint; gameranx says it stays, so do not rely on it.

Keep a stack of Schnapps. PC Gamer's guide is about stockpiling them so you can save as often as you want, and brewing them early also raises Alchemy and makes money to sell.

Watch the save pool. Since Patch 1.4 the game warns before a Schnapps save overwrites the oldest file, so keep important saves from being pushed out.
