Mutt the Dog

Mutt, Henry's dog from Skalitz, goes missing early in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 and comes back through the side quest Mutt, which ends with a wolf fight near the Nomads' Camp; reuniting opens the Houndmaster skill, whose commands include Heel, Stay, Go Home, Sic'em, Track, Free! and Bark. Mutt cannot be killed, and feeding him fresh meat keeps him obedient.

Mutt, the dog from Skalitz who follows Henry in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, is lost in the game's opening and found again in a Trosky side quest named after him, in which Henry tracks him from a pond past a shepherd's flock to a wolf pack near the Nomads' Camp. Once reunited, Mutt opens the Houndmaster skill: he sniffs out enemies and treasure, attacks on command, tracks quest targets and barks to distract guards (Game Rant's Houndmaster guide, Feb 10, 2025). He had a bigger role in the first game's A Woman's Lot DLC, and in the sequel he is central to several quests (TheGamer, Mar 10, 2025).

How to get Mutt back

Mutt runs off in the opening, and the side quest Mutt follows his trail. PCGamesN's Mutt guide (Paul Kelly, Feb 19, 2025) gives the order: the edge of the pond near Henry's escape, where a bandit is searching a corpse; Bozhena's hut; the innkeeper in Zhelejov; the fisherman; and then shepherd Siegfried, whose flock is being attacked by wolves. Game Rant's Mutt guide (Taylor Pittman, Feb 5, 2025) sums it up the same way: Mutt was last seen swimming in the pond past the herbwoman's hut, and the fishermen tell of a wolf pack running with wild dogs.

The shepherd's part is a trap for wolves. PCGamesN says to lead the ram Ignatius, who follows carrots, up the hill to a forked birch, drop the carrots, hide and kill the wolves; the dog running with them is not Mutt. TheGamer's beginner tips describe the whole quest as "a carrot-loving sheep", a horse that needs saving and an archery competition (TheGamer, Feb 4, 2025).

The trail ends at a wolf pack. In PCGamesN's account Gamekeeper Vostatek points Henry to the pack, who follows a trail of dead animals to a reunion cutscene and a fight with the wolves; Vostatek may not appear until the side quest Lackey is done. Game Rant places the reunion near the Semine River, north of the Nomads' Camp, while PCGamesN says south of it.

The wolves' cave holds the reward. PCGamesN says it contains a cuirass and a sword, which its armor guide names as a Patched Cuirass and a Broadsword (PCGamesN, May 16, 2025), and Patch 1.2 changed the loot in Mutt's wolf den (Patch 1.2 notes, Mar 13, 2025). The reunion opens the Houndmaster skill tree. Other Trosky quests are on Side Quests and the region on Trosky Region.

Commands

Mutt answers seven commands, some unlocked by perks. Game Rant's Houndmaster guide (Lucas Simons, Feb 10, 2025) lists them:

Command What Mutt does Needs
Heel Follows Henry None
Stay Waits in place None
Go Home Goes home and waits until called back None
Sic'em Attacks the enemy or animal Henry aims at Lifesaver for people; Hunt! (Houndmaster 6) for animals
Track Leads to a quest target, using a quest item's scent Houndmaster 1 and a quest item
Free! Sniffs out places of interest or game and barks when he finds something Search! (Houndmaster 6)
Bark Barks to distract guards while Henry sneaks Bark! (Houndmaster 12)

He also works without orders. Game Rant says Mutt growls at likely enemies and barks at treasure and points of interest in the wilderness, and warns of bandits during fast travel. Barking pairs with the sneaking on Stealth, Lockpicking and Pickpocketing.

Feeding, obedience and injuries

Feed Mutt by interacting with him and choosing "Feed"; he needs fresh, unspoiled meat now and then (Game Rant). Spoiled food and how to keep meat fresh are on Food, Sleep and Health.

Obedience decides how much punishment Mutt takes before he flees and how fast he comes back. Game Rant's Houndmaster guide says feeding him often and praising him raise it, while going days without food or getting hurt in a fight lower it. Patch 1.2 made it harder to feed Mutt in the middle of combat (Patch 1.2 notes).

Mutt cannot be killed. Game Rant says that when he takes too much damage he flees, yapping, and a cooldown stops Henry calling him back until he feels safe; the perk Loyal Companion cuts that cooldown by a quarter, and Defender makes him take 10% less damage. Patch 1.4 made Mutt run away after being hit with a sword several times (Patch 1.4 notes, Sep 9, 2025). None of the guides read for this page describes a way to heal Mutt with an item; the outlets cover only his fleeing and return.

Houndmaster perks

Houndmaster levels from anything done with Mutt, and books are the fastest way. Game Rant says detection, combat and hunting with him all count, and Houndmaster books are sold early by the scribe in Troskowitz; PCGamesN's leveling guide (Feb 4, 2025) counts it among the fastest skills and says to bring Mutt everywhere. Patch 1.2 rebalanced Houndmaster's experience gain (Patch 1.2 notes), and the Scholarship perk Wonders of Beasts speeds it up.

The perks below follow PCGamesN's list as updated May 16, 2025, with Game Rant's figures where it gives more; later patches may have changed them. Every tree is on Perks.

Level Perk Effect
Start Lifesaver Mutt defends Henry in battle
6 Hunt! Mutt hunts game on command
6 Search! Mutt sniffs out points of interest (the Free! command)
8 Body Heat Bed quality in the wild +20% (capped at 50%, per Game Rant)
8 Loyal Companion Mutt returns faster after fleeing
10 Charming Companion +3 Charisma with Mutt nearby
10 Hellhound Enemies likelier to flee with Mutt near
12 Bark! The Bark command
12 Dogs' Best Friend Strange dogs do not bark at a sneaking Henry
12 Heightened Scent Mutt finds enemies more easily, also in fast travel (+50% range, per Game Rant)
14 Defender Mutt takes 10% less damage
14 Faithful Companion Obedience falls slower (25% slower at level 16, per Game Rant)
18 Rip and Tear Mutt's bleeds drop foes faster
20 Sic 'em! Mutt's attacks are 20% stronger

TheGamer ranks Sic 'em! among the best perks in the game (TheGamer, Feb 18, 2025). Charming Companion's Charisma bonus helps with the dialogue checks on Speech and Charisma. The Aesop potion boosts dog handling, and a strong one silences dogs (PCGamesN, Feb 18, 2025).

Mutt in quests

Mutt matters from the first hours. In the main quest Easy Riders, Oats asks Henry to beat Tankard at dice in exchange for a sausage for Mutt (Game Rant, Feb 6, 2025).

Track is how he helps later. In the side quest Hunting the Werewolf, Mutt tracks an arrow to a vagrant camp for Shepherd Nolan north of Semine (Game Rant, Feb 9, 2025), and in The Fifth Commandment in Kuttenberg he tracks a suspect, Zdena, from her scarf (Game Rant, Mar 4, 2025).
