Release and price

Brushes with Death launched on May 15, 2025 at 17:00 CET alongside Update 1.3, which also added free horse racing, at a suggested price of €5.99, per PLAION's announcement. On Steam it costs $5.99, and PCGamesN gave the UK price as £4.99. Warhorse first showed it in a dev stream on Apr 24, 2025.

It is the first of three story expansions in the $29.99 Expansion Pass, with Legacy of the Forge and Mysteria Ecclesiae, and is included in the Royal Edition sold since Nov 12, 2025; see DLC and Expansion Pass and Editions and Where to Buy. Hotfix 1.3.1 on May 22, 2025 fixed Brushes with Death quest behavior.

How to start Brushes with Death

The DLC starts at a purple marker southeast of Trosky Castle, where the painter is tied to a tree, per Game Rant's walkthrough. The guides disagree on how far into the story you must be. PCGamesN says no particular base-game quest is needed; Game Rant's walkthrough lists finishing For Whom the Bell Tolls as a prerequisite, and its main quest list advises finishing Storm, the last Trosky quest, first.

The second half needs the Kuttenberg region. PowerPyx says the fifth quest, The Night-Mare, requires access to the Kuttenberg map, which opens with the main story's move there, and that the questline can still be played after the main story ends.

The painter and the story

The painter is a troubled artist with a skull. Warhorse's Steam post says Henry's decisions "determine the fate of a troubled artist and the legacy he'll leave behind", and the Steam description says the quests involve finding, persuading and sometimes eliminating characters for his painting (Steam). Warhorse's and PLAION's own texts do not name him; PCGamesN and Game Rant call him Master Voyta.

The story opens with a rescue. In A Sketchy Situation Henry drives off two wolves, unties the painter, and agrees to recover his brushes and, optionally, three dice from the thieves Yura and Clovis, who camp southeast of Troskowitz: beat Yura in a shooting contest and Clovis at dice, or beat them both up and loot them (Game Rant). Game Rant notes that killing the wolves rules out the Lent achievement. The painter then takes a room on the top floor of the left wing of Trosky Castle.

The questline crosses both maps. The first four quests play out in the Trosky Region and the last six around Kuttenberg, where the painter's work leads to a bailiff's painting in Pschitoky and to the carpenter Chrudosh, per PowerPyx and Game Rant.

Unveiling is the last quest. After Henry gives the painter the Mandrake Decoction in Root of Evil, he finds the carpenter Chrudosh through Carpenter Plank, tracks him from Maleshov with Mutt, frees him from the bandit Reaper's camp and recovers a statuette of the Virgin Mary, per Game Rant. See Mutt the Dog and Alchemy and Potion Recipes.

Endings

Warhorse says every step, conversation and task "completed (or ignored!)" decides which of three endings Henry reaches, and that "those who truly earn his trust" find a hidden moment (Warhorse on Steam). In Unveiling Henry either lets the painter finish, which rewards the Painter's Muse and Voyta's skull, or passes a Speech check to burn the painting, which gives no skull, per Game Rant.

The skull has a resting place. Burying it in Voyta's grave west of Bylany earns the achievement Rest in One Piece, held by 3.5% of Steam players (Oct 25, 2026), one of the game's rarest.

Rewards

Shield painting is the DLC's lasting reward. It unlocks in the first quest, and Warhorse says it offers over 100 unique designs and color combinations; PCGamesN lists color palettes, patterns and insignias (PCGamesN), and the painter paints Henry's shields at Trosky Castle (Game Rant). Some Knight Shield designs unlock only after the story ends, per PowerPyx.

The quests also give gear and achievements. Game Rant says "Stained Honour" rewards a Miser's Cuirass whichever choice you make, a detail seen only in its search summary (Game Rant), and the finale gives the Painter's Muse.
