Differences from the First Game

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 continues Henry's story weeks after Kingdom Come: Deliverance (Feb 13, 2018) ends, with two maps each about twice the first game's, crossbows and early guns, merged skills, a script almost three times longer and smoother combat. You do not need to play the first game: Warhorse released a story recap for newcomers, though playing it adds context.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 picks up Henry of Skalitz's story only weeks after Kingdom Come: Deliverance, released on Feb 13, 2018, ends, and you do not need to have played the first game: Warhorse published a story recap of it on launch day, and the sequel restarts Henry's skills in its prologue. What changed is mostly scale and smoothing: two maps each described as double the size of the first game's, crossbows and early gunpowder weapons, skills merged into fewer categories, a script of over 2.2 million words against about 800,000 (GamingBolt), and combat that RPG Site found "slightly refined from the original title, but not dramatically so". The realistic core stayed: first-person melee, Savior Schnapps saving, needs and reputation.

The first game

Kingdom Come: Deliverance was Warhorse Studios' first game, crowdfunded on Kickstarter in 2014, where it asked for £300,000 and raised over £1.1 million, and released on Feb 13, 2018 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Its Steam page sets it up: Henry, a blacksmith's son, survives a raid ordered by King Sigismund that burns his village of Skalitz and kills his parents, and ends up serving Lord Radzig Kobyla in the resistance.

It became a long seller. Warhorse says it "went on to sell more than 10 million copies across all platforms" (Warhorse, Feb 2026), and a Nintendo Switch port of its Royal Edition by Saber Interactive followed on Mar 15, 2024. Its five DLCs were Treasures of the Past, From the Ashes, The Amorous Adventures of Bold Sir Hans Capon, Band of Bastards and A Woman's Lot (Warhorse).

Do you need to play the first game?

No: Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 can be played on its own. Warhorse posted a story recap of the first game on launch day, a video of under ten minutes that Destructoid said means "nobody has to go into the sequel blind" (Destructoid). Henry also loses much of his ability early in the prologue: he falls from a cliff, is badly hurt and loses many of his levels, and the roughly two-hour linear opening teaches combat, alchemy, stealth and reputation again (PCGamesN).

Playing it first still adds context. The sequel opens with characters and grudges from the first game: Henry still wants revenge and his father's sword, taken by Istvan Toth, and the letter he and Hans carry to Trosky was drafted by Jobst of Moravia in the first game (TheGamer). For both games in one purchase, the Kingdom Come: Deliverance Saga Bundle holds the Royal Editions of each (Warhorse); see Editions and Where to Buy.

How the story continues

The sequel starts weeks after the first game's ending, though about seven years passed for players (Game Rant). Henry and Hans Capon are riding to Trosky with a letter, Sigismund is still the overarching enemy, and Otto von Bergow, lord of Trosky, has taken his side.

Old characters return in bigger roles. Father Godwin, a minor character in the first game, becomes the sequel's second playable character; Sir Radzig Kobyla, revealed in the first game as Henry's real father, sends him to Trosky; and Erik, who helped sack Sasau in the first game, now wants revenge for Istvan Toth's death (TheGamer). The whole story is on Story and Main Quest Walkthrough, and the people on Characters, Henry of Skalitz and Hans Capon.

Henry himself has changed. He has gone from a poor peasant to a knight serving a noble, and can now read, write and fight (PCGamesN).

A bigger world

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 has two maps where the first game had one. PLAION describes the Bohemian Paradise around Trosky Castle and the Kuttenberg region as each double the size of the first game's map (PLAION), and the Kuttenberg map opens about 20 hours into the main story (PCGamesN). See Trosky Region and Kuttenberg.

Its city is the biggest change. Warhorse says the explorable city of Kuttenberg is "some ten times larger" than Rattay, the first game's most comparable town, with streets grouped by trade and mine shafts to sneak through (Warhorse).

Combat

Melee works the same way at heart, aimed by direction with blocks, perfect blocks and master strikes. Game Rant says the attack directions went from five in the first game to four (Game Rant), and RPG Site found the fighting "slightly refined from the original title, but not dramatically so" (RPG Site).

Warhorse made weapons more distinct. Blunt and edged weapons now behave more differently, every animation was motion-captured with actors chosen for each weapon type, and unarmed fighting adds locks, grips, throws and disarming (Warhorse). Master Strikes work only with swords, per Game Rant. See Combat Guide and Melee Weapons.

Crossbows and guns are new to the series. Warhorse added crossbows as a new weapon type (Warhorse) and early gunpowder weapons (PLAION); Henry first gets a handgonne in the main quest The Finger of God (PCGamesN). See Bows and Crossbows and Firearms.

Skills, perks and gear

Several of the first game's skills were folded together. Pickpocketing and Lockpicking, trained separately in the first game, are now one Thievery skill, and Herbalism and Hunting are now Survival (RPG Site). The sequel has 4 stats and 15 skills, among them the new Houndmaster (Game Rant); see Skills and Stats and Stealth, Lockpicking and Pickpocketing.

The perks were largely rewritten. Designer Karel Kolman told Deep Silver, "We only kept a couple of the first game's perks, and then we made new ones" (Deep Silver). See Perks.

Clothing is easier to manage. The sequel adds three outfit loadouts you can switch at any time, where the first game made you change clothes piece by piece to raise Charisma (RPG Site). See Armor and Clothing.

Saving, needs and difficulty

The restrictive save system carried over. You still save with Savior Schnapps, by sleeping in a bed you own, at quest autosaves or with Save and Quit (PCGamesN), and RPG Site's reviewer noted the system returns but ended the game with more than 50 bottles to spare (RPG Site). See Saving and Savior Schnapps and Food, Sleep and Health.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 has no difficulty slider, per TheGamer. Its only option is Hardcore Mode, added in Patch 1.2.4 on Apr 15, 2025, with no map position, no fast travel and at least three permanent negative perks.

Mutt and companions

Mutt, the dog from Skalitz who had a bigger role in the first game's A Woman's Lot DLC, is central to several of the sequel's quests (TheGamer). He goes missing in the opening, and once found he follows commands that the Houndmaster skill unlocks (Game Rant). See Mutt the Dog.

Pebbles, Henry's horse from the first game, can be found again in the Semine stables (Game Rant). See Horses.

Polish, people and reception

Warhorse spent more on testing this time. CEO Martin Frývaldský said the higher cost went largely to more outsourcing and testing, because the first game was criticized for launch bugs (CzechCrunch); RPG Site called the sequel a game "polishing up the rough edges of the original game" (RPG Site). See Development History.

The cast is broader. TheGamer says the sequel answered criticism of the first game with more ideological variety, a larger female cast and a "time-accurate approach to racial diversity" (TheGamer), and RPG Site found the Cumans less one-dimensionally evil and women given more agency. See Historical Background.

Critics rated the sequel higher. It scores 89 on Metacritic for PC against the first game's 76, and GameSpot called it "a triumphant sequel, improving upon its predecessor" (OpenCritic), while Eurogamer found it "just as divisive, prickly and abrasive as its predecessor". See Reception and Awards.
